Colorado's Water PlanLast month, the Colorado Water Conservation Board released the final state water plan. Green Industries of Colorado (GreenCO) carefully reviewed the plan—all 12 chapters and 8 appendices—over recent weeks and has offered a summary of aspects of the plan that may impact the landscape industry.

The Colorado Water Plan presents both opportunities and possible challenges. But through a solid understanding of the plan, landscape companies can play an active role in its development by offering guidance and expertise as it is implemented.

The landscape industry is poised to act as stewards of responsible use in Colorado, using both practical experience and science-based information to educate both government and consumers on water conservation.

As stated in the policy review, “The most important point from the Colorado Water Plan is that as an industry, we must shift our focus from a state-only level and also engage on water policy at the local level, as there will be a greater need to educate and lobby the local governments, water providers and users about outdoor water use.”

The quantification study of GreenCO’s Best Management Practices (BMPs) is a key tool in educating the public about how to reduce water consumption and protect water quality in outdoor water use. Proper use of the BMPs can result in water savings that will contribute to the availability of sufficient, clean water for future generations without sacrificing beneficial outdoor green spaces in our homes and communities.
