According to a recent marketing report, 2022 looks promising for sales and services related to gardening. Consumers reported that they are spending more money and more time on gardening and on improving their outdoor spaces. The 2022 Garden Trends Report says that spending surged in 2021 over the previous year, and the National Retail Federation expects a 10.5% growth in spending next year.

If 2020 was the year in which consumers focused on building a backyard oasis, 2021 had them setting their sights on the front yard. Perhaps to welcome guests for some outdoor socializing or to create curb appeal, consumers wanted an inviting, attractive home and landscape that faces the community in addition to the outdoor living areas they pursued during the early days of the pandemic.

Additionally, people showed interest in what Garden Trends calls “living television.” Activities like birdwatching and wildlife viewing at home grew in popularity, as did improving landscapes to invite those creatures. Landscape companies might offer birdhouses, plants that attract birds and pollinators, and gardens that provide habitat in order to serve these consumers. If these things are already a part of your offerings, include it in your marketing so that consumers are aware when they are making decisions.

The report also predicts that a hybrid of in-person and virtual events and shopping will continue. “Social commerce” is a growing area consumer spending. Making purchases was watching videos online or browsing social media is an area of opportunity. If your landscape company is looking for new customers, having a social media strategy—not merely having an account—is key to connecting with clients.
