The City of Denver’s Community Planning and Development continues to accept applications to serve on a technical advisory committee to update the 2019 Denver Green Code. Landscape industry experts are encouraged to apply for the committee by the October 1 date.

Denver Water, which is involved with developng and updating the green code and has made recommendations to the committee regarding water-saving standards, also encouraged the landscape industry to bring its expertise to the table. Some of the water provider’s proposed recommendations would directly affect landscape work—especially that of landscape architects. There are suggested requirements related to native and drought-tolerant plants, 5-10 gallons per square foot, and WaterSense-certified irrigation controllers with weather tracking and auto-shutoff.

Discussions with the committee will also involve enforcement of the updated green code.

“This is an important opportunity to have a voice in the development of codes that could result in significant water savings in the Denver metro area,” said John McMahon, CEO of ALCC. “Our members, as stewards of the built environment, a uniquely qualified to help the committee understand how to achieve reduced water use while maintaining attractive landscapes that support the health and success of the people and creatures that inhabit our communities.”

Code committee meetings will be held virtually, making it easier to participate. Apply to serve on a technical advisory committee by October 1, 2021.
