The law applies to employers with fewer than 500 employees. Companies with more than 500 employees are not required to participate in the provisions of the law. According to the bill, the Secretary of Labor has the authority to exempt companies with fewer than 50 employees. However, there has not been any statement of such an exemption formally granted. Therefore all employees with fewer than 500 employees--including those with fewer than 50 employees--should comply with the law unless an announcement is made otherwise. See the bill text for further information about any tax credits available with regards to paid sick and paid family medical leave. It is important to follow-up with the appropriate agency to verify the details of the law. This news was originally shared on ALCC's blog.
