Chautauqua is a 40-acre park located at the base of the Flatirons in Boulder. The City of Boulder leases 26 acres to the CCA, which in turn entrusts Designs BySundown with maintenance of this historic site. Professionalism and courtesy must be shown by landscape maintenance staff at all times, as the grounds are open 24/7 and 365 days/year. Designs BySundown employees are considered “ambassadors” and greet patrons, answer questions and provide directions. Maintenance is organic and chemical free per the CCA’s requirements. All green waste generated through maintenance operations is recycled. Grass clippings are left on top of the lawn to break down organically and provide nutrients for the soil. Downed trees and pruning debris are chipped into mulch that can be placed on-site in bed areas and tree wells. These efforts result in a savings of 80 cubic yards of waste being diverted each year from landfills to a useful purpose on the grounds. To help with noise abatement, all mechanical equipment, such as leaf blowers, is throttled back to minimal RPM during designated quiet hours during the summer. Rakes and brooms are used instead of blowers to reduce noise. Additionally, Designs By Sundown maintains seven separate irrigation systems on the grounds. Repairs and renovations to the existing system resulting in more efficient water use and reduced staff time by eliminating hand-watering. Finalists for The ELITE Award for Maintenance exemplify the highest standards of landscape maintenance practices that honor the original design and protect and conserve natural resources. Other criteria on which they are judged include following industry BMPs, the principles of Xeriscape, and sustainable procedures to keep the landscape viable over time. By preserving the character and beauty of this historic landscape, Designs By Sundown was a clear choice for this award. Read more in this issue of Colorado Green NOW: |
