Landscape companies honor family of fallen deputy |
On Friday, April 20, ALCC’s Southern Chapter completed a Day of Service project that was close to the hearts of many in the Colorado Springs area. Approximately thirty local landscape professionals and local high school students donated time, expertise, and materials to renovate the outdoor space at the family home of Deputy Micah Flick, who was killed in the line of duty earlier this year. This extensive project brought together over eighteen Colorado Springs companies and a contingent of Falcon High School students who are participating in ALCC’s Landscape Career Pathways program. The goal of the day was to craft a beautiful, useful and commemorative space for the late deputy’s family. Volunteers removed existing landscaping and installed a newly leveled lawn space for a play area, an extensive retaining wall, a large outdoor patio, multiple garden beds, a new irrigation system and a memorial tree. All the materials, design and labor were donated by ALCC member companies. ALCC chapter members participate in an annual Day of Service by donating materials and volunteering their time and expertise to improve outdoor spaces within their community. Deputy Micah Flick was born and raised in Colorado Springs and has a large extended family in the area. One of the project’s organizers, Jonathan Campbell of Colorado Stoneworks Landscaping, knew Micah Flick personally and played in his family’s lawn as a child. “The Flick family spends a lot of time together in their front yard, making dinner outside or throwing a ball,” Campbell explained, “We want to provide them a low-maintenance and enjoyable space. I also hope we can showcase how special Micah was, his family is, and how the community wants to pitch in and support them.” The ALCC Day of Service projects have always been a draw for landscape professionals in the area. Campbell and Colorado Stoneworks Landscaping have participated for over seven years. “It’s amazing what can get done in one day with this many people on the site,” he explained. “For our team, this is a chance to be proud of what we can accomplish.” The Day of Service projects also offer a chance for landscape companies and professionals to contribute locally in a tangible, meaningful way. “We’re often so busy during the summer, that we don’t have time to do anything for the community,” offered ALCC member Dustin Hamilton of Sunflower Landscapes. “It’s always a neat way for us to give back.” Thanks to the companies that participated in this project:
Thank you to all the additional organizations who contributed to this project!
