A legislative update from our partners at the Accredited Snow Contractors Association:

The Colorado State Senate passed SB 18-062 on third reading, 27-8. However, ASCA Executive Director Kevin Gilbride says a lot of work still needs to be done as the association's model legislation heads to the House for consideration.

The bill may require some additional tweaking to appease opposition forces building in the House. The addition of the right amendment could neutralize any existing political dissension for SB 18-062.

"With the help of the Colorado team of professional snow and ice management contractors we've been able to generate considerable momentum with state lawmakers in the Senate for the support of SB 18-062," Gilbride says. "While this is a significant victory, we still have our work cut out for us as it heads to the House for consideration."

The bill now heads to committee before receiving a vote on the House floor.

The ASCA's model legislation -- The Snow Removal Service Liability Limitation Act -- would make indemnification agreements and hold-harmless language passing liability from the property owner or property managers to the contractor, null and void in Colorado. Similar legislation is under consideration in state legislatures around the snowbelt, and it became law in Illinois in August 2016.
